Scene II, The Lunatic > Black Monk

from Dark Matters by Contemporary Dead Finnish Music Ensemble

/

about

The Black Monk is based on a short story by Anton Chekhov. It is about a philosopher/scientist who becomes mad but is still very happy and productive, even brilliant in his life and work. When he is cured with drugs and drinking lots of milk (!), he becomes unhappy, fat and bold normal middle-aged man. There’s also a legend of a 1000 years old monk dressed in black that walks in the desert and in space.

lyrics

Working the ground, it’s beautiful it’s meaningful and it’s good
Bustle abound, gardening with everyone for our food
Living the life, successfully in company like the ants
Enjoying the plants, materially - aesthetically
How many you got, is not the lot, the secret of the success
It’s all about love, the love for work, the selflessness
If everyone would, be satisfied with a piece of cheese and bread I know that I should, be satisfied be gratified

You are one of those truly chosen by God You are serving Eternal Truth
Seeking all my youth
Something unreasonable
Something infinitive, ineffable

Hearing these sounds, high harmonies with deep and mystical bells Sacred sounds, a Serenade of Angels
In to the night, in to the garden and up to the skies, me invite
I see now the light, the portal - I’m immortal!

You are one of those truly chosen by God You are serving Eternal Truth
Feeling it right through
Something intangible
This is bliss unexplainable This is bliss unspeakable

Down to the river, down with the pathway, steep and deep Down to the river, down with the setting sun to sleep What is this silence, space and peace
Silence, space and peace
Like the whole world is waiting for me
Like the whole world is wanting to see Humming and buzzing, wind and wuthering Black distant pillar whirling
Black Monk closer now he’s coming faster how He’s passing by me smiling by me smiling

I’m feeling joy, I’m very happy
Happiness all day and night
It cannot be right, I’m getting shabby
It’s filling me up, it’s nothing but
Natural – supernatural?
There’s no place for fear, ‘cause I’m not hurting you dear Hurting you dear, no place for fear

Fearing what will happen now when I’m “cured” Lured in misery
In mediocrity
Oh what cruelty

“A thousand years ago a monk, dressed in black, wandered about the desert, somewhere in Syria or Arabia. Some miles from where he was, some fishermen saw another black monk, who was moving slowly over the surface of a lake. This second monk was a mirage. Now forget all the laws of optics, which the legend does not recognise and listen to the rest.
From that mirage there was cast another mirage, then from that other a third, so that the image of the black monk began to be repeated endlessly from one layer of the atmosphere to another. So that he was seen at one time in Africa, at another in Spain, then in Italy, then in the Far North.
Then he passed out of the atmosphere of the Earth, and now he is wandering all over the Universe, still never coming in to conditions in which he might disappear. Possibly he may be seen now in Mars or in some star of the Southern Cross. But, my dear, the real point on which the whole legend hangs, lies in the fact that, exactly a thousand years from the day when the monk walked in the desert, the mirage will return to the atmosphere of the Earth again and will appear to men. And it seems that the thousand years is almost up....According to the legend, we may look out for the Black Monk today or tomorrow.”

Congratulate me, I’ve lost my mind - lost my mind so it seems
Join mediocrity, if you want to be “well and healthy”
Some have greatness, to achieve things that change the course of the world Unlock and be whirled, with the wings of madness

You are one of those truly chosen by God You are serving Eternal Truth
Seeking all my youth
Something unreasonable
Something infinitive, ineffable Feeling it right through Something intangible
This is bliss unexplainable Indescribable – intangible This is bliss unspeakable

Look to the river, black distant pillar whirling
Look to the river, Monk with amazing speed arriving What is this silence, space and peace
Silence, space and peace
Calling out youth and bravery
Calling out life it’s all beauty
Humming and buzzing, wind and wuthering
My mouth red blood is flooding
Black Monk whispering, why stopped believing in You genius die in smiling die in smiling

Contemporary Dead Finnish Music Ensemble Helsinki, Finland

CDFME is a musical community with sole purpose to bring good music to the world.
The Ensemble was born in a year 2000 out of the need to bring back some of the more ambitious and progressive music that had to go literally underground in the 1980’s-90’s.
The music is intensive symphonic rock with lots of room for air, melodic and cinematic, progressive without being pompous in a needless manner.
